Planning

Timing is key when preparing your pool for its summer opening. It is best to open your pool two to three weeks before you plan to start utilizing it regularly. Starting at this time provides plenty of time to prepare the water and address any issues that may occur.

Gather Supplies

Before preparing your pool for summer, you must have all the necessary tools and supplies gathered. Some of those tools include the following:

  • Skimmer net
  • Pool brush
  • Pool vacuum
  • Water testing kit
  • Pool chemicals
  • Functioning filter and pump

Clear Debris from the Pool Cover

Clear debris and dirt from the pool cover before removing it. Wash off dirt from the cover and allow it to dry completely before storing it. Cleaning and preparing your pool’s cover before storing it for the summer helps it last longer and prepares it for use next winter.

Clear Debris from the Pool

Using a skimmer net, remove leaves, twigs, and other debris that have accumulated in the water. Also, check the bottom of the pool to ensure it is free of large particles, which can negatively impact the pool’s chemical balance.

Inspect Pool Equipment

Check all pool equipment, including heater, filter, and pump. Ensure these items are in good working condition and free of damage or debris. Once inspected, reconnect hosts and fittings and lubricate any o-rings if needed to help prevent leaks.

Turn the Pool Pump On

Turn on your pool’s filtration system to start water circulation. Monitor the pool and pump for a few hours to ensure it’s working correctly. The pool needs to be on and running for at least a couple of days before you begin doing any vacuuming on the bottom of the pool.

Test and Balance Pool Water

Using a pool water testing kit, check the water’s chemical balance. If needed, adjust the pH, calcium hardness, and alkalinity levels. Additionally, shock the pool with chlorine to kill bacteria and algae that may have developed during the winter.
