You may already know that Mt. Lake Pool & Patio are the pool service experts of Solebury, PA, but did you know we are a company that wears many hats? In addition to our pool services, we carry a full inventory of patio furniture from a wide variety of brands, styles, and materials. Today, we’d like to discuss the importance of cleaning and maintaining your patio furniture, so your investment is around for many seasons to come.

Ideally, outdoor furniture should be cleaned at least twice per season. The first clean should be in the spring when it comes out of storage and then again in the fall when it is put away for the winter. However, we do recommend maintaining the cleanliness of your furniture by going through these steps a few times while the furniture is in use, to ensure a long-lasting life.

Here is Mt. Lake Pool & Patio’s simple guide on how to care for the most common materials that can be found in an outdoor patio set.

Cushions

Cushions can easily be cleaned using a household soap of your choice and lukewarm water. Gently scrub the cushions with a soft bristle brush or a sponge and let them air dry on a beautiful, sunny day.

If that’s not enough, take it a step further and mix a ¼ cup of a multi-purpose cleaner of your choice and a ¼ cup of Clorox in a very large bucket of lukewarm water to gently scrub the cushions clean. You want the Clorox to be diluted enough so it does not damage the material. Then, leave to air dry.

Slings

Slings can be maintained easily just by hosing them down with water and mild soap. If that is not sufficient, then we recommend the same cleaning mixture used for cushions. Using the same process, scrub the sling using a soft bristle brush or sponge. One positive aspect of owning sling furniture is that it does not take long to dry. Leaving your sling in the sun to dry should do the trick.

Wicker

Wicker furniture can be hosed down with just water or mild soap and water and wiped clean. Stubborn dirt can be scrubbed off with a soft bristle brush. For best results, dry this material right away.

Cast/Extruded Aluminum

Cast and extruded aluminum furniture can be hosed down with water or water and mild soap and wiped clean. If over the years you notice the frame becoming dull, you can use something like Armor All wipes or Rust-Oleum wipes to brighten the frame. Because most modern metal framed patio sets are now rust-resistant, we don’t have to worry about this. If your furniture is not rust-resistant, you can paint the rusted areas, or use a paste wax to keep it from further damage.

Wrought Iron

Wrought iron furniture can also be hosed down with just water, or mild soap and water and wiped clean. We do suggest covering wrought iron furniture with a plastic cover when not in use to protect it from rusting and damage from the outdoor elements.

Fabric Umbrellas

Most fabric umbrellas are machine washable. To wash, just unscrew the finial at the top and pull the fabric off the ribs of the frame to detach. Then, place the fabric on a delicate cycle with cold water in your washing machine. DO NOT put the fabric in the dryer. Put it back on the frame wet and open the umbrella to air dry. This will help maintain the life of the fabric and remove any stains/outside debris.

If your fabric umbrella is not machine washable, please follow the steps outlined in the cushion care section. Always use a soft bristle brush, rinse thoroughly, and let it air dry in the sun.
